Microstructure-based analysis of deformation and fracture in coated equiatomic polycrystalline titanium nikelide

The research team of the Laboratory of Mechanics of Non-homogeneous Materials experimentally and numerically investigated the deformation behavior, phase transformations, and fracture of the polycrystalline structure of a TiNi alloy with a bilayer Ti₄Ni₂O–TiO coating. A model microstructure was generated using EBSD data, and simulations of tensile loading followed by unloading of the composite were performed for different models describing the mechanical behavior of the coating layer materials. It was demonstrated that the most extensive coating damage during loading and, consequently, the largest volume fraction of residual martensite (up to 22%) after unloading occur when the outer coating layer behaves elastically, while the inner layer exhibits elastic–viscous–brittle deformation and fracture behavior. Under these conditions, multiple cracking and delamination occur in the inner coating layer adjacent to the substrate.
The work was performed according to the Government research assignment for ISPMS SB RAS, project FWRW-2026-0003.
