Our History

The Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISPMS SB RAS) was founded in 1984.

1984

The Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN USSR) was founded on January 1, 1984, by the order of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Decree of the Presidium AN USSR. Panin V.E., corresponding member of the AS USSR, Doctor of Science (Phys. & Math.), was appointed as founding director of the Institute.

1988

Dissertation committee D003.038.01 was established at the Institute. The committee accepts doctoral and candidate dissertations for defense in three specialties: solid mechanics 01.02.04 (Phys. & Math.), condensed matter physics 01.04.07 (Phys. & Math., Eng.), metal science 05.16.01 and heat treatment of metals and alloys (Eng.).

1994

By the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science was given the status of the State Scientific Center (SSC) of the Russian Federation. The Institute operated in the SSC status until December 1997.

1998

The Institute began to issue the Physical Mesomechanics journal in the Russian and English languages. In 2007–2012, the Physical Mesomechanics journal was distributed by the Elsevier B.V. International Publishing House. Since 2012, the journal is distributed by the Springer Nature international publishing house.

2002

Professor S.G. Psakhie, Doctor of Science (Phys. & Math.), Corresponding Member of the RAS, was elected as director.

2008

The second dissertation committee (D003.038.02) was established at the Institute, dealing with the defense of dissertations in the following specialties: materials science 05.16.09 (Eng.); technology and equipment for mechanical and physicotechnical processing 05.02.07; welding, related processes, and technologies 05.02.10.

2016

According to the monitoring data of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the Institute entered the top 10 academic institutes of Russia in terms of the number of publications per researcher (Scopus and Web of Science databases).

2017

According to the scientific institution performance assessment, the Institute falls into category I (leading scientific institutions) and is among leading research and development institutions.

2019

The general meeting of the Institute employees elected E.A. Kolubaev, Doctor of Science (Eng.), as director.
